Kayak Tour from Varenna

Paddle under a castle, past the shortest river in Italy, along the most dramatic stretch of the eastern shore.

Varenna's shoreline is the most vertical stretch of the central lake: the mountains drop straight into the water, the castle of Vezio watches from the ridge, and just south of the village the Fiumelatte — the shortest river in Italy, a few hundred metres of foaming white water — pours out of the rock into the lake. Kayak tours launch right from the village and follow this coast. From €30 for a short guided paddle up to €98 for half-day outings, April to October. You pay the guide on the day; we match you with vetted local guides.

The Fiumelatte run

The signature route heads south from Varenna along the cliff-lined shore to the mouth of the Fiumelatte. The river is a genuine oddity — it bursts from a cave high in the rock and crashes into the lake after only a few hundred metres, earning its name ('milk river') from the white foam. From a kayak you see it the way it should be seen: from the water, close enough to feel the cool air coming off the current. It flows roughly April to October, matching the kayak season.

The castle from below

Paddling north instead, the shore passes directly under the castle of Vezio, the thousand-year-old fortress on the ridge above Varenna. Everyone sees it from the ferry; from a kayak at water level it looks twice as high. Guides time the route to the light — morning sun hits the castle wall and the village's painted houses from across the water.

When to go

Morning, early if you can. The eastern shore is sheltered first thing, the lake is flat, and the light on Varenna's facades is at its warmest. The afternoon Breva can push chop against this coast, and while guided tours still run in moderate conditions, the early departures are the ones people remember.

Practical details

Tours run April to October, with May, June, and September the sweet spot for weather and water temperature. Kayaks are stable singles or doubles, briefing included, no experience required. Bring water, sunscreen, and a change of clothes. The launch point is a short walk from Varenna's ferry landing and train station — easy even as a day trip.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a kayak tour from Varenna cost?

Guided paddles start at €30 per person for about 1.5 hours. Tours to the Fiumelatte river mouth run €55–70, castle-view routes €60–75, and half-day outings with a swim stop reach €85–98.

What is the Fiumelatte?

The shortest river in Italy — a few hundred metres of white water that bursts from a cave above the shore south of Varenna and pours straight into Lake Como. It flows roughly April to October, and kayak tours paddle right up to its mouth.

Can you really see the castle of Vezio from the water?

Yes — paddling north from Varenna the shore passes directly beneath the ridge where the castle stands. From water level it dominates the whole view, far more impressively than from the ferry.

Do I need experience?

None. Stable kayaks, a short briefing, and a guide alongside the whole way. The morning water off Varenna is usually flat and beginner-friendly.

How do we pay?

Directly to the guide on the day of the tour. We never take prepayment — we match you with a vetted local guide and confirm your slot, and cancellations for weather cost nothing.
