Most one-day Lake Como itineraries fail because they try to fit in five towns. The honest version fits three: a morning in Como or Bellagio, a ferry across the central lake, an afternoon in Varenna, and — if you do one splurge — a boat at sunset. This guide gives you that plan with realistic timings based on how ferries and crowds actually behave, plus what to skip, what to book ahead, and how to end the day on the water instead of in a queue.
The honest premise
You cannot do Lake Como in a day; you can only do a beautiful slice of it. Choose two towns, three at most, and accept that the ferry timetable — not your ambition — sets the rhythm. The day below assumes you arrive in the morning and leave in the evening, whether from Milan or a nearby base. It uses only public ferries plus one optional private boat at the end. Follow it and you will remember the day fondly; try to add two more towns and you will remember the queues.
Morning: Como or Bellagio
Arriving by train from Milan, you land in Como around 9:00. Give the town an hour and a half: the cathedral, the lakefront, and a coffee, then catch the 10:30-ish ferry toward the central lake. The crossing to Bellagio takes 45–60 minutes and is itself a highlight — the villas slide past like a film. If you are already based in the central lake, start directly in Bellagio: arrive before 10:00 to walk the lanes before the day crowds, then the gardens of Villa Melzi before lunch.
Midday: the crossing and lunch
Lunch in Bellagio works if you sit down by 12:30 — later and the good places fill. Then take the short shuttle ferry across to Varenna, a fifteen-minute hop with the lake's most famous view behind you. A ferry day pass, roughly €15–30, covers these crossings and pays for itself quickly. Do not eat a long lunch if a villa is on your list: Villa del Balbianello closes to new entries well before the site shuts, and ferries thin out in the late afternoon.
Afternoon: Varenna
Varenna is the afternoon's answer: quieter than Bellagio, and lovelier in the softening light. Walk the lakeside lovers' path into the village, climb to Castello di Vezio if your legs allow — the view earns it — or take the gardens of Villa Monastero at an unhurried pace. Gelato on the tiny harbour, then position yourself for the evening. From Varenna you can catch a ferry back toward Como, or cross to Menaggio if that is where your evening boat departs.
Evening: end it on a boat
The day's perfect ending is a private sunset tour: ninety minutes on the water as the light drops, departing about an hour and a half before sunset, at €350–450 for the boat. Shared sunset departures exist too, from roughly €60–120 per person. It turns a good day into the one you talk about for years.
