Getting there: walk or boat
Two ways in. On foot: a scenic twenty-minute walk from Lenno's ferry dock, mostly flat along the bay then up through the woods — manageable for most, hot in August. By water: a taxi boat from Lenno, or your own tour boat, drops you at the villa's small dock, which is how the place was meant to be approached. Many private boat tours include a Balbianello stop. Note there is no car access to the villa itself, so whichever way you choose, some walking or floating is involved.
How to time the visit
Give the gardens at least an hour and a half, plus the guided interior tour if booked. Mornings bring the calmest water and the emptiest paths; late afternoon gives the warmest light on the loggia. The last entries are well before closing time — check the day's schedule and do not cut it fine. Combine the villa with Lenno's lakeside for lunch, and if the lido next door is open, a swim with the villa in view is the locals' reward after the walk back.
